YiuYiu 瑶瑶, Chinatown Block Party 2024
YiuYiu 瑶瑶 (aka Rochelle Hoi-Yiu Kwan) presents Chinatown Block Party 2024 which brings together Canto-Pop favorites across the decades, reaching across from the records + youthful memories of the grownups table to the CDs bumping + swapping at the kids table.
Inspiration starts in the 80s, when anyone could be a DJ, filling our homes, cars, living room karaoke parties, and dancefloors with our favorite songs. Begun in 1979, San Francisco Chinatown - where Yiu Yiu’s father discovered songs that reminded him of the home he left behind in Hong Kong. Together with Yiu Yiu, they started Chinatown Records, a homegrown community effort to celebrate the richness of music, memory, and history that comes with inherited family collections. Across close to 20 different collections spanning 1920’s-2000’s Chinese music and beyond from family, friends, and neighbors, Chinatown Records continues to grow as a community-powered, living archive. Fast forward to 2024, San Francisco Chinatown, Yiu Yiu will play behind the turntables and tear up the dance floor alongside friends + neighbors – just like her father did here decades ago.
About YiuYiu 瑶瑶
Rochelle Hoi-Yiu Kwan (aka YiuYiu 瑶瑶) is a cultural organizer, artist, and oral history educator based on Lenape land in NYC's Manhattan Chinatown. She takes on her childhood name YiuYiu 瑶瑶 as a researcher and DJ for Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 ~ a homegrown community effort to celebrate the richness of music, memory, and history that comes with inherited family collections. Spanning across Chinatown block parties, sonic family histories, living room listenings, and endless learning with family and neighbors, Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 is an ever-growing record of the people we love, who bring all this music back to life with us.
Yiu Yiu瑤瑤 (又名Rochelle關愷瑤)呈獻華埠街頭派對2024，匯集近數十年來最受歡迎的粵語流行曲，從年代久遠的歌曲 + 承載成年人青春回憶的桌子到唱片的碰撞+ 與孩子所在的桌子進行交換。
創作靈感來自於80年代，當時所有人都能成為唱片騎師，用我們最愛的歌曲填滿我們的家、汽車、客廳、卡拉OK派對和舞池。故事始於1979年的三藩市華埠，瑤瑤的爸爸突然聽到一些讓他緬懷家鄉 - 香港的歌曲。後來與瑤瑤一起創立了"華埠錄音"，這是一個本地社區的努力，來紀念底蘊深厚的音樂、記憶與歷史，當中亦包含專屬於瑤瑤家族的珍藏。"華埠錄音"匯集了近20個橫跨20年代到2000年代的華語音樂收藏，另加上由家人、朋友和鄰居提供的音樂，"華埠錄音"繼續壯大成一個由社區帶動，活生生的檔案室。轉眼來到2024年的三藩市華埠，瑤瑤會在唱碟機後沿奏，與朋友和鄰居一起炸裂舞台 - 就像他的爸爸數十年所做的。
Rochelle Hoi-Yiu瑤瑤是一位文化組織員、藝術家和口述歷史教育家，居住在紐約曼克頓華埠的 Lenape Land上。她用兒時的名字YiuYiu 瑤瑤作為“華埠錄音”的研究員和唱片騎師（DJ）。“華埠錄音”是一個社區計劃，來慶祝音樂底蘊、記憶和歷史，這通常是從家族流傳下來的珍藏品。橫跨華埠街頭派對、家族歷史、客廳小故事以及與家人和鄰居無盡的閑話家常，“華埠錄音”是與我們所愛的人一起成長的記錄，他們將這些音樂帶回我們的生活。
