Sasinun Kladpetch, Untitled, 2023

Sasinun Kladpetch’s site-specific installation, Untitled, utilizes dirt, pebbles and weeds from the streets of Chinatown and Portsmouth Square to construct an abstract self-portrait reflecting her immigrant story and its relationship to the physical environment. Kladpetch views her resilience and capacity to thrive as analogous to the endearing grass, weeds and moss that germinate and grow out of the concrete sidewalk cracks - even with minimal water and sunlight. Created specifically for Edge on the Square, Kladpetch’s installation explores the immense capacity, tenacity and fortitude of the immigrants who have crossed through Chinatown over the centuries (as one of the earliest immigrant gateways), and went on to thrive and flourish in their new homeland.
