Ko Si Hing \ Listening Room

About the Artwork

Taoist Master Ko Si Hing’s inspiration for the Listening Room comes from the Taoist and Buddhist deity Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion, (also known as Kwan Yin, Kuanyin, Kannon, Quan Am and Avalokiteśvara). Guanyin’s name loosely translates as "The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World", and as such, hears the prayers and calls of the suffering and has chosen to remain on earth to intercede and help. Centering on the theme of sound as a vehicle for healing, Master Ko Si Hing has created a room for somatic experiencing and listening of diverse sounds, music, vibrations, and frequencies. The different types of sounds and styles of music, together with installed art objects, signify the hybridity of Master Ko Si Hing's practice that bridges the historical with contemporary, sacred and profane, and his lived diasporic experiences in China and the United States.

About Ko Si

Master Ko Si Hing is the Executive Director of The Lotus Taoism Institute. The Lotus Taoism Institute was founded in San Francisco in 2013 by Taoist master Gao Xinji to promote Taoist teachings and preserve traditional Chinese culture in a modern diasporic context. Derived from the Long Men (‘Dragon Gate’) School of Taoism, the temple focuses on meditation, self-reflection, and self-healing practices in the serene Outer Sunset district. Taoist deities from Chinese mythology bless the space with a solemn yet uplifting atmosphere. In 2022, the organization became the Lotus Tao Culture Association, a non-profit serving community members from all walks of life.
