Reading Room invites visitors to sit down, pick up a newspaper and read about the numerous community stories brought to life by David Huang (Huang Weijiang), a distinguished photojournalist at Sing Tao Daily. Huang has dedicated over 19 years to documenting the lives of individuals existing on the margins of society. His photography serves as a powerful medium for amplifying the voices of those often overlooked by mainstream narratives. By focusing on the lived experiences of marginalized communities, Huang aspires to narrate their stories, contributing to a broader understanding of social issues related to migration, diaspora, and social justice across China and the United States. His work reflects a commitment to honoring and uplifting the underserved members of the Chinatown community, granting them dignity while emphasizing their agency, creativity, and resilience.

 

Huang's photojournalism transcends mere documentation; it serves as an community archive of both personal stories and an intricate mapping of the broader cultural landscape. Each photograph and written article captures the essence of daily life and the enduring spirit of the individuals he portrays. In doing so, he transforms his observations into meaningful narratives that contribute to a writing of history today, resulting in a collective legacy that redefines and rewrites the histories of his community as one imbued with respect and power. About David

David Huang (Huang Weijiang) is a photojournalist for Sing Tao Daily, a career spanning over 19 years. Born in Guangzhou, China, David’s photography documents the lived experiences of persons on the fringes of society, centering individuals who are often overlooked or marginalized in mainstream media. 

 

Deeply inspired by the documentary photography of Magnum Photos, David aspires to use images to document, narrate and amplify the stories of individuals in his community. While growing up in China, David was a prolific photojournalist, winning multiple first-place awards for his work reporting at Yangcheng Evening News. 

 

Since immigrating to the United States in 2006, David has worked in various nonprofit organizations, and his contributions to journalism has earned him multiple first-place honors from New America Media. Continuing his photojournalist career at Sing Tao, David captures and uplifts the stories of people in two countries—China and the United States— exploring themes relating to migration, diaspora and social justice.
